High Security Keys: Do You Need Them?

High Security Keys: Do You Need Them?

lock-outYou may have heard about high security locks and keys. The idea may have intrigued you–after all, security is extremely important. But are they a good idea for your business? Are they worth the investment? We’ll look into that–but first, we’ll go over some basics.

High security keys differ from normal keys in a few key ways (sorry, couldn’t resist), both in how they’re sold and in design. The key blanks, key codes, and key-making equipment are only given to locksmiths authorized by the lock maker (they can’t be made with normal key-making equipment). The locks are shipped without any pins: we only add pins and cut the keys when you purchase high security keys and locks. This way, you can be absolutely confident that no copies were made before the sale. If you want more copies of the keys, you’ll have to return to the original seller: nobody else is authorized to make copies. Because of all these security measures, you can rest assured that nobody else is making copies of your keys.

As far as physical difference goes, high security keys are designed with extra security features, but the extra grooves are the most important. Most keys have grooves on the outer ridge of the key. High security keys have grooves on the inner edge, as well. This makes picking or forcing a high security lock incredibly difficult.

Is it a Good Idea to Invest in High Security Keys?

Now, is it a good idea for your business to invest in high security keys? If your building has something valuable that you leave there overnight–whether it’s computers, documents, or anything else that you wouldn’t want to lose–it’s important to take extra security measures. Do you really want a standard lock to be all that stands between a thief and your valuable company assets? Now, there are some options other than high security keysaccess cards, for example–but high security keys have some distinct advantages. Because they’re not electronic, they still work during power outages and disruptions. They’re also generally less expensive than access cards, so you’ll have great security for an even better price. So, high security keys are a great economical option that gives you lots of extra security, including letting you control who has access to your building. We’d call that a great investment.
