I changed the lock on my front door
So you can’t see me anymore
And you can’t come inside my house
And you can’t lie down on my couch
I changed the lock on my front door-Tom Petty “Change The Locks”
Much like the above lyrics by Tom Petty you change the locks when you don’t want somebody to come inside your house. Getting your locks rekeyed (what we in the local locksmith industry call it when we change the locks) is the no brainer of the security world, but exactly when should this be done?
#1 When After Buying a House
With all of the things to think about after buying a home, security could be the furthest thing from your mind. Don’t let that be the case with you. Why? Well, there are a number of reasons but, one of the biggest reasons is, that it’s probably safe to say that the previous owner had a few spares made, do you know where all those spares are now? The answer to that is most certainly no, so stay safe and get your locks rekeyed.
#2 When You lose a Key
If you’ve lost a key or have one come up missing, make sure to call your local locksmith and have your locks rekeyed. Some people may say that’s just being paranoid, but if you want to be safe and feel safe, change the locks.
#3 After Hiring a Contractor
You should trust your contractor but, if you’ve just had some renovations done, do you necessarily trust all of their sub-contractors? If the answer is no, then it might be time to rekey your locks.
#4 After Your Home is Built
This combines both 1 and 2. True, you are the first person to live in the house but there are a lot of different people that worked to build it. Staying safe means staying vigilant, make sure to have your locks rekeyed. This is also the perfect time to have the front and back doors – and basement doors – keyed alike for one key convenience. This is never done when houses are being built, but it’s a simple step that avoids a lot of complication.
#5 When a Roommate Moves Out
True, you trusted your roommate enough to live with them but do you know which one of their friends has a key to your place? If not, then it might time to call your local locksmith and have your doors rekeyed. The same can be said if you’ve been separated from your spouse but first check with your lawyer, some areas of the country won’t allow you to lock somebody out if they are a joint owner.
There are other reasons why you should call a local locksmith, such as Advanced Lock & Security to change the locks on your home but we wanted to bring the 5 reasons above to your attention. Remember, the difference between locked and secure is advanced!
