When you’re in need of a locksmith, it seems like choices pop up out of the woodwork–so how can you decide which one is really right for you? Here at Advanced Lock & Security, we want to help you choose the residential locksmith that will have your best interests at heart. Of course, if you’re in our service area (which includes much of Pennsylvania, Delaware, and South Jersey), we think that you should choose us–but if you’re elsewhere and looking for a good locksmith (or if you want to make sure we’re as good as we–and our satisfied customers–say we are), here are some convenient pointers to choosing the residential locksmith that’s right for you.
- Choose a company that’s well-established in the community. It’s sad to say, but the world is full of sub-par locksmiths that are in the business to make a quick buck and then disappear–and many of these businesses aren’t even locally owned at all. When you’re looking for a locksmith company, make sure that it’s one that won’t perform a half-hearted job and then leave. A good way to do this is to look on various review websites–and ask your friends and neighbors who they have used.
- Check the company’s availability. It would be great if everything in life went wrong at convenient times–however, that’s usually not how the world works. If your locksmith company doesn’t have 24-hour availability like we do here at Advanced Lock & Security, you may be left waiting for help at an inconvenient time.
- Use a company that offers lots of services. A great locksmith will offer so many more services than just changing or fixing locks. Take us, for example: here at Advanced Lock & Security, we offer residential services like window bar installation, desk and cabinet keys, keyless locks, home safe services, and much more!
- Talk to the locksmith before the job. When you’re choosing a company that will be helping keep your house secure (or performing other home-related services), you want to make sure it’s a good match. You need to feel comfortable with the level of expertise and confidentiality that a locksmith offers. This ties in with the first point, since it’s a good idea to look at what others are saying, as well–but talking to the locksmith you’re thinking of employing is a good way to get a personal feel for the business.
I agree that talking to the locksmith is important before they start the job. I like to know that I can trust the person working on my home. I generally get a good feel of a person within the first five minutes. Hopefully, by doing this, I can find someone I can trust and use repeatedly.
I think that it’s very important to make sure that you have the number of a locksmith somewhere on you at all times. You never know when you’ll be locked out of something. I never thought about making sure that the locksmith offers all kinds of services! I’ll make sure I take that into account while I’m looking. Thanks for the help!
These are some great tips, and I appreciate your advice to find a locksmith company that offers a variety of services. My husband and I just moved into a new house, and we want to have the locks rekeyed. We’ll definitely look for a locksmith that can do that as well as other services that we might need in the future. Thanks for the great post!
I definitely agree that the company’s availability should be one of the first things you check when choosing a locksmith for your needs. Like the article says, life tends to throw problems at you during inconvenient times, so it helps to find a company that offers 24-hour service. Of course, it also helps to try and talk to the locksmith before the job, at their office if it’s an options, so that you can confirm that they’re a legitimate and accredited locksmith.
I’m a fan of doing research and asking around whenever I’m considering a service or product. It’s done wonders for me, though it takes time. I’ve never locked myself out of my house or car yet, but I’m sure it’ll happen. I’ll want a good honest locksmith, and I think they’re easy to find if you take the time.
When I first needed a locksmith I was glad that there were services that were available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. I feel that a locksmith should always be available to help someone in need. This way, people could know that they were ok if they lost their keys. Thanks for the great advice and tips!
Thanks for the post. I really like the idea to choose a company that is well establishes and well known. I think that can say a lot about the company and their reputation. You can feel confident that they will perform good work.

I would have never thought to find a locksmith that offers other services as well. It makes sense to try to find a locksmith you like so that you only need to go to one for all of your needs. It may help to get a list of services they offer and compare that with other locksmiths to help you decide who to go with.
Thanks for sharing. I really like how you said to talk to the locksmith before the job. It is always nice to have an idea of the kind of work someone will do. I think a big way to tell how a person will work is to get to know him or her. My sister has moved into a new house. I want to get it rekeyed for her safety. I will have to call around and see what local locksmith will do the best job.

You can also look up reviews online. That can help you to see what other people think about the company. Then, you can make a more educated guess. Hopefully you can choose the right company.
I totally agree that you should choose a company that provides a lot of services, and meet the locksmith before the job. A lot of people just call anyone to do their locksmith jobs and they don’t know who is going to show up. If you’re having an emergency you can have peace of mind by getting to know the person you’re going to call beforehand.
My husband and I are in the process of building a new home and are researching to find a good locksmith. I like the point you made about checking to see if they offer more services than just changing locks. I never thought to do that before, but I can see why that would be significant. I think I need to do more research and be a little more thoughtful in choosing a locksmith.

I can’t stress enough to potential clients that checking your locksmith’s reputation and physically speaking to your lock technician are so very important. Checking credentials and licenses are a must do for all homeowners looking for a residential locksmith.

I actually never knew that locksmith companies could also specialize in window bar installation, as well as the other things you mentioned. It sounds like this would be a good idea because if you can find a good company that can do all of those things, you won’t ever have to find another company to take care of issues with things like your window bars. I’ll have to keep this in mind for when I am finding a locksmith in my new area.
I often am either losing or forgetting my keys, and I need to get a locksmith to have on hand. I could probably ask my friends and family is they have used a local locksmith and go with that service.
Thanks for the tip on asking friends and neighbors for recommendations on locksmiths they’ve used.
