Heading Out For The Holidays – 5 Things You Need to Remember to Keep Your Home Safe While Away

If you’re headed out of town for the holidays, you’re probably nervous about leaving your home while you’re away. At Advanced Lock and Security, we’ve got a few tips to help you protect your house. Read through our list of 5 things to remember to keep your home safe while you’re away; then, be sure to follow our tips to keep your house protected before heading out on your trip. And, if you have any problems with your house while you’re away, we’ll be on it!

  1. Make sure your door locks, window latches, and hinges are in good condition. Before heading out for the holidays, it’s important to check the basic security measures on your house. Be sure to test all the locks and deadbolts as well as window latches and even door hinges! With every entry point, there’s another way that your home can be broken into. That’s why it’s important to check up on your home hardware. If your locks or door handles are loose, windows are unsecured, or door hinges are vulnerable, we recommend having an Advanced Lock and Security locksmith replace or rekey your locks, refit your window latches, or repair door hinges so you can take your holiday trip with peace-of-mind!
  2. Enlist a Friend to Watch Your Home and Pets. Functional locks and window latches are just the start of your home security–it also helps to have a friend keep an eye out for you. Having a friend or neighbor watch your house, bring in your newspaper, and shovel the walk is a great way to keep your home from being a target for break-ins. A dark house with a stack of newspapers on the porch makes your home look like an easy mark. Make sure that before you leave, your house won’t look like you’re gone!
  3. Request delayed deliveries. If you get newspaper, mail, and packages delivered to your house, it’s a good idea to request delivery stoppage or delayed delivery from your paper service and postal carrier until you return from your holiday travels. Delaying deliveries to your house not only protects your mail and packages from thieves, it helps keep up the appearance that you’re home!
  4. Set up electronic security measures. Your friends at Advanced Lock and Security recommend installing electronic security measures like an electronic door breach alarm and closed circuit cameras. Having an electronic alarm equipped on your doors provides an instant response so you and emergency responders will know as soon as there’s a break in. If you install closed circuit cameras, you’ll have footage of who approaches your home as well as a built in deterrent–cameras are a great way to scare of thieves and burglars.
  5. Keep your home well lit. We recommend keeping your porch light on a timer or motion sensor if possible to dissuade burglars from targeting your house. Lawn lights are another great way to keep your family home as well-lit as possible. One of the best ways to prevent break-ins is to make sure that not only your locks are secure but that your house is lit and watched over. If you have any questions about keeping your home secure while you’re away, we’re happy to help you at Advanced Lock and Security.
