When it comes to home security system, there are some misconceptions that need to be set straight. Advanced Lock & Security is here to debunk the top 5 home security myths.
It’s too expensive. This is the most common security system myth. If you live in a mansion and want a security system James Bond would have trouble getting past, yes, it will be expensive. But security systems these days aren’t just for the high and mighty. A decent system can range anywhere from $20-$40 per month. Giving up one dinner out in a month could be getting you the peace of mind offered by alarms on doors and windows, a motion detector, and, often, even a camera to help you keep an eye on your house when you’re not there.
A bad guy can just cut the line. This may be true for older systems, but many systems these days are wireless. A burglar can cut all the lines they want, but they can’t cut something that’s not there. What’s more, burglars usually aren’t that committed. They want to get in easy, get out fast, and not get caught. They’re looking for an easy target, so simply having a sign up in your yard declaring that you have a system is often enough to make them move on to a house that they think isn’t protected. One study found that 50% of burglars said they’d move on from a house they thought had an alarm system to one that’s an easier target.
My neighborhood is safe. A safe neighborhood is only safe until something happens in it, and it only takes one time. Don’t let that be your house. You may really live in a safe neighborhood, and the best way to do your part to keep that neighborhood safe is preventing crimes with security systems.
A dog will do the job. We get it, Fido is pretty fierce, but he’s also easily bought. There’s a chance a barking dog is a good enough deterrent, but a treat or bone may turn him in to the bad guy’s best friend, rendering him useless. Also, we’ve never met a dog that can call the police.
False alarms will cost me. Many customers are worried about the fact that frequent false alarms will end up costing them money. This myth has been ingrained since the beginning of the security system. But these days, false alarms are actually quite uncommon, and it’s even more uncommon for the police to actually show up at your house in the case of a false alarm. Security systems used to just automatically notify the authorities and the police were at your house before you knew what happened. These days, nearly every security company can set up pet-proof systems that keep your pets from setting off the alarm, and they will call you, often texting you as well, to make sure they actually need to notify the police before sending emergency responders to your home. These measures reduce the chances of the police showing up when they don’t need to. Even if they do, many companies offers grace periods, not charging you for the first few false alarms which are few and far between anyway.
