We all lead busy lives with work, school, and activities, and that often means our family members come and go from our homes at different times. Because our children are sometimes home alone for a period of time, it is very important to educate them about home security. One of the easiest ways to educate your family about home security is to create a list of home security do’s and don’ts. Writing them down and posting them in a visible location such as on the refrigerator is a good idea to make sure that they are reviewed often. It can also be fun to enlist each family member for ideas, making it a group effort. • Bring in Mail and Newspapers Daily
• Always Use a Peephole to See Who is at The Door
• Arm Security System When Leaving the Home and at Bedtime
• Make Sure Pets are Secure in the Yard or House
• Periodically Test Smoke and Carbon Monoxide Detectors
• Change Batteries Every Year in Smoke and Carbon Monoxide Detectors
• Have a Fire Escape Plan

Family Home Security Don’ts

• Leave Bicycles, Lawn Equipment, or Toys Outside Unattended
• Open the Door for Someone You Don’t Know
• Hide Keys Outside
• Leave Garage Door Openers in Cars Parked Outside
• Leave Small Children Unattended
• Leave Windows Open When Leaving the Home
• Post on Social Media When You Are Going Out of Town
• Leave Garage Door Open During the Day or Night
• Enter the Home if You Notice a Broken Window or Open Door
• Tell Anyone Except a Trusted Friend or Neighbor That You are Home Alone
