Business Security – Fighting Retail Theft

That almost seams like a rhetorical statement, but you’d be surprised at how many retail establishments don’t have business security at the top of their to-do list.

Below are a few tips to consider when thinking about business security and they are broken down into 3 areas, burglary, customer theft and employee theft. Be diligent!

Protecting Your Retail Business From Burglary

  • Light the exterior of your building with permanent light fixtures, ones that are difficult to reach and thus, tamper with.
  • Install motion sensors that detect movement inside the building.
  • Have entry alarms installed that sets off an alarm when a window is broken or a door opened.
  • Install a deadbolt on each exterior door.
  • Have safety glass installed.
  • Install a CCTV system.

Protecting Your Retail Business From Customer Theft

  • Have your employees greet everybody that walks in. A retail business with attentive employees has less shrinkage.
  • Increase customer service for the same reasons as above, also it’s just good business.
  • Install a CCTV system.
  • Train employees to keep their heads up and eyes open. Teach them how to spot would be thieves and what to look for.
  • Routinely walk the sales floor.
  • Install better lighting in hard to see areas of the sales floor, along with mirrors, cameras and anti shoplifting signs. Especially if your have a large area with potential blind spots.

Protecting Your Retail Business From Employee Theft

  • Screen all employees before hiring them.
  • Never leave just one employee on duty, especially at closing time.
  • Use card access systems instead of regular keys, that way you can keep track of who goes where.
  • Install a CCTV system.
  • Review exception reports for excessive voids, overruns, no sales and refunds.
  • Empower employees to speak up and guarantee anonymity.
