Cooking Out – Home Grilling Safety Tips

Grilling Safely–Some Tips From Your Neighbors at Advanced Lock and Security

Having a cook out can be a great way to enjoy the summer. There’s nothing better than the sight and smells of meat and vegetables on the grill. Whether you’re grilling up burgers, steaks, or corn on the cob, we recommend taking every available safety precaution for a safe cookout. Here are just a few of our tips for grilling safely.

To start, and it may seem like common sense, but only use propane and charcoal grills outdoors and placed away from the home, railings, and low hanging branches. We also can’t recommend enough keeping pets and children away from the grill area. Once you’ve got a clear and clean (as possible) cooking area, we recommend being attentive to your grille.

Before getting the coals or propane going, it’s a good idea to keep the grill clean and look for grease in the grill. Cleaning the grill of excess fat helps prevent unexpected flame. When cooking with gas, be aware for potential gas leaks, which may present themselves with smells. You can also check the gas line by applying a solution of soap and water to the hose, which will bubble when you turn the propane tank on if there is a leak. When using a charcoal grill, we recommend taking over precaution you would with an open flame. Avoid using flammable liquids other than charcoal starter fluid to get the coals going. Using an electric charcoal starter avoids starting off the coals with fire, which may be a safer bet. After grilling, it’s a good idea to allow the coals completely before disposing of them. Of course, you’ll want to use the coals for s’mores before they all cool off!
