Your home is the place where you should feel safest of all and we’d like to share some tips to help keep you safer than ever before. Many accidents occur in the home and, while you can never avoid all peril, here are some things you and your family can do to make your home as safe as possible for everyone who lives there or visits.
For starters, in every room of your home, you should always keep walkways clear of clutter and well-lit. In addition, keep your home clean and mop and dust at least weekly. Dust and other particles can exacerbate symptoms of asthma or any breathing-related issues. Make sure to empty water containers when you’re finished using them. This includes cleaning buckets, tubs or any container that holds liquid as young children can drown in even a small amount of water. Speaking of young children, it’s a good idea to cover unused electrical outlets with plastic safety plugs to prevent accidents.
Other tips include installing smoke detectors and carbon monoxide detectors in your home if you don’t already have them. Additionally, be sure to test them regularly and, if they’re battery operated, that they have a fresh battery at least twice per year. While we’re on the subject of fire safety, it’s a good idea to make sure that every member of the family understands “stop, drop and roll” techniques and that you have and practice an evacuation plan in case your household does experience an emergency. Additionally, learning CPR can be the difference between life and death for a family member if an injury or other trauma occurs. Home safety is more than just preventing accidents or learning how to deal with them if they occur, though, it’s also about keeping unwanted people out of your house. That’s where sturdy locks and other safety and security measures come into play.
Make sure that all exterior doors have sturdy deadbolts installed. Additionally, it pays to make your home appear “lived in” while you’re away on vacation with the assistance of timers or other devices. Motion-sensing floodlights installed near areas where someone can gain entrance to the house are a great deterrent to burglars and making sure that windows lock properly and/or are alarmed will go a long way toward preventing unwanted entry into your home.
