It’s a fact of life that the kitchen in your home can be the most dangerous room in your home, but with careful planning and precaution, it can be a much safer place to be. If you have young children in your home, some general safety tips are also the most simple. Steps such as installing protective guards on sharp edges or corners, securing knobs and handles, sealing off electrical outlets with safety plugs, using non-skid rugs or having a child-resistant garbage can will minimize the potential for injury.
When it comes to kitchen appliances, the stove and oven should always be secured to the wall. In addition, when using the stove, use the back burners when possible and always keep flammable objects such as curtains, towels, oven mitts and more as far away from the burners as possible. Always turn the stove and/or oven off when not in use and know where the hot surfaces are. Many modern stoves feature a “hot surface” warning light, but many older ones do not: don’t let children near a stove or oven that’s recently been used as serious burns can occur even when a stove or oven is in the process of cooling down.
Childproof latches are a good idea to have on other appliances as well – the refrigerator, the freezer, the dishwasher and any other appliance your kitchen may feature. Sharp objects such as knives need to be stored where children can’t get at them and dangerous, heavy, breakable items such as china should be kept locked away. Items that are on tables, especially tables that have cloths, can easily find the floor when a child becomes curious and injury can easily occur. In many cases, keeping the kitchen and dining area in your home safe merely takes common sense, but making sure that attention is paid to every area is key. At Advanced Lock and Security, we wish you a happy and safe 2016!
