Does Your Lock Make the Grade – The 3 Different Lock Grades

Lock GradesAre you looking for ways to make your home or business more secure? It’s time to analyze the grades of your home or office locks. There are three levels of lock grades– Grade 3, Grade 2, and Grade 1. Grade 3 locks test at the lowest resistance and are the lowest accepted quality while Grade 2 and Grade 1 locks are high quality. To qualify for a grade, a lock must latch and unlatch without fail for a specified number of cycles and it must be able to withstand an amount force to prevent break-ins by prying the door or wrenching the lock. Knowing the grade and quality of your lock is crucial to keeping your home secure.

Grade 3 Locks

Grade 3 locks are the lowest strength locks allowed to be sold as door locks in the United States. The durability of Grade 3 locks is measured by the number of cycles and the amount of force grade 3 locks are built to withstand. Grade 3 locks can operate for at least 200,000 cycles and should withstand 120/225 lbs. of force per inch for knobs/levers. These locks should not be used for exterior doors–they’re better suited for interior doors like storage spaces.

Grade 2 Locks

With a Grade 2 lock, you’ll have significantly more strength than Grade 3 locks. Grade 2 locks can be used in your business and are the perfect lock for securing your home. Tested to withstand twice as much use as Grade 3 locks, Grade 2 locks are capable of operating through 400,000 cycles and withstanding 150 lbs. of force per inch for knobs and 450 lbs. per square inch for levers. Because they are required to meet certain requirements in order to qualify as Grade 2 locks, Grade 2 locks are harder to pick, break, or pry open. We recommend Grade 2 locks to secure your home or business!

Grade 1 Locks

When you need maximum security, choose a Grade 1 lock is the best choice. Grade 1 locks must perform without fail for 800,000 cycles. They must also withstand 300 lbs. of force per inch for knobs and 700 lbs. of force per inch for levels.
