Children are growing and getting smarter each day, so just because they couldn’t do something yesterday, doesn’t mean they can’t do it today. If your child hasn’t been able to open certain locks or climb up bookcases yet, they will figure it out. Baby locks probably won’t work on your older toddler, so make sure you keep them up to date with age appropriate locks on anything that could open and present a risk. Also, don’t forget your windows! So many toddlers have been seriously injured by tumbling out open windows. Make sure windows stay securely locked at all times. When you need to open them, install window guards to prevent your toddler from inadvertently putting too much pressure on a screen and falling through. As your toddler learns to climb, you will have to be even more aware of where they are at all times. If your home has stairs, be sure your baby guards are wall mounted. Toddlers are much stronger than babies, so it’s easier for them to push through a baby gate that’s not drilled into the wall. Be especially aware when you have guests or are at some else’s house. This doesn’t mean that you need to helicopter over your child all the time, but you can assign a family member to play or watch your toddler as you prepare a meal or mingle and chat with guests.
Not surprisingly, the kitchen and the bathroom prove to be the most dangerous places to leave your child alone, as gaining access to hazards often requires just opening a cabinet. But it’s more than just getting into the silverware drawer or opening all the cosmetics under your sink. A child can become curious and grab at cords or appliances on the counters, drastically increasing chances for these items to fall on the child and burn or significantly injure them, especially while you’re cooking. Childproofing is essential and, often, a great preventative measure, but it’s not 100% effective. Adult supervision is always the best way to keep your child safe around your house. Let just be thankful that toddlers don’t stay toddlers forever!
