Home invasions are one of the scariest things you could ever experience. Many of us are blessed enough to never have to go through one, but they are a very real possibility, and Advanced Lock & Security wants to help you be prepared. If your home is ever invaded while you’re there, you need to have a plan. Read on to learn our suggestions for how to protect yourself from home invaders, then formulate a plan that works for you and your family. Make sure everyone in the house knows it and practice your procedure on a regular basis. It’s not about giving into fear, it’s about being prepared so the fear isn’t an issue.
First, it’s important to note that home invasions usually happen one of two ways. Either the intruder breaks through your home’s defenses or you let them in yourself. So, be sure you verify who is at the door before you open it. Many dangerous people pose as repairmen, sales people, or something of the sort. Also, keep in mind that a door chain is pretty easily broken by an angry child, so don’t trust it to keep out a full grown adult.
Now, the first and best thing you can do to protect yourself during a home invasion is to use your security system if possible. Nearly all security systems will have a panic button on the wireless touchpad, so you should be keeping that close to where you’re sleeping so you have easy access as soon as you need it in the event of a night intrusion. As soon as you’re alerted to the fact that there’s an intruder in your home, use your security system panic button and the police will be immediately notified.
As your security system or a member of your family is alerting the authorities, use a pre-planned security procedure to either exit the house or get to your safe room. If someone is inside your home, it is always better to get out if possible. If there is no way to safely exit your home, get to a safe room. This should be a pre-set area of your home that everyone in the house is aware of. It should have a strong door that opens inward and locks as well.
If possible, it’s always a good idea to have some sort of weapon, or even just pepper spray, readily available in different areas of your home. Just be sure these items are well hidden and out of the reach of children.
Being prepared is the best thing you can do for you and your family in the event of a home invasion. As with most things, though, prevention is the name of the game.
